  5.      John Donne‚Äôs poem on ‚ÄúThe Sun Rising‚Äù exploits the 
  6. contrast between aristocratic and bourgeois time. The one trait 
  7. that most damned the bourgeoisie  of the nineteenth century 
  8. was their punctuality, their pedantic devotion to mechanical-
  9. time and sequential order. As space-time flooded through the 
  10. gates of awareness from the new electric technology, all 
  11. mechanical observance became distasteful and even ridiculous. 
  12. Donne had the same ironic sense of the irrelevance of clock-
  13. time, but pretended that in the kingdom of love even the great 
  14. cosmic cycles of time were also petty aspects of the clock:
